More adventures

Fun first--last Chanukah links for this year:

Chanukah videos and halacha

Zot Chanukah

It started out with an unusually-severe hot flash that took a strange turn--when I put olive oil on my hot and bone-dry face, my face turned bright red, and the oil irritated my skin enough to make me run to the dermatologist.  I was puzzled when she said it wasn't likely that the irritation on my face (and also on one shoulder, from putting olive oil on my skin after my shower) was an allergic reaction to olive oil, but couldn't tell me what else might have cause the problem.

It also started with something else new--some minor pain in my right hip.  That was a surprise, because I've had trouble sleeping on my left hip for years.

After over a week of pain in the hip, and yet another round of getting red in the face, it occurred to me that there might be some connection between the two problems.  So I did an internet search, and was quite surprised to discover that hot flashes can be a symptom of rheumatoid arthritis.  Who knew?

Also on the list of possible rheumatoid arthritis symptoms is dizziness.  This might account for the fact that almost a year's worth of vestibular therapy didn't alleviate my balance problem nearly as much as I had hoped.

Whether the type of skin problems that I usually have--see "bone-dry face," not to mention just about everywhere else--is related to my arthritis, I don't know.

The only thing that probably isn't related is the plantar fasciitis on the bottom of my left foot.  I told my husband that it's now a regular balancing act--with a bad left foot and a bad right hip, I don't even know where to use my cane.

Bottom line:  I'm now an alligator-skinned dizzy dame and red-hot mama who hasn't got a leg to stand on.  :)

Chanukah songs, 5775/2014 edition

Here's a little "artwork" that I created in PowerPoint a few years ago (added Dec. 18).

8 Best Hanukkah Videos of 2014 (with some repeats from link above)

Dec. 17 update:  Flory Jagoda sings her Ocho Kandelikas, a Ladino Chanukah song.  (Lyrics in Ladino, with English translation, here.)

Dec. 18 update--old favorites of mine, both musical (links below) and visual ("artwork" above):

The Ein Prat Fountainheads' "Light Up the Night"

The Maccabeats' "Candlelight"

Dec. 20 post-Shabbat laugh spot, or Chanukah humor:

Me (on Erev Shabbat/Sabbath Eve/Friday night):  I was hoping to get to bed early, but first, I have to practice "Roni v'simchi" (Zechariah 2:14-4:7).

Punster:  Who are Roni and Simchi?

Me:  Oh, haven't you heard?  Roni is marrying Simchi Bat Tzion this Sunday.

[After 37 years of marriage to this character, I don't miss a beat.  :) ]

Too busy to blog :(

For openers, I just finished two majors projects at the office, and am working on a third.

For closers, I've been seeing an alternative doctor every Sunday for treatments (mostly chelation) for various health issues, the usual pharmaceutical treatments being worse than the ailments.  It takes me an hour to get there, anywhere from half an hour to two hours for treatments, etc. (depending on whether I'm also getting therapeutic massage and/or a consultation with the MD or Physician Assistant), and another hour to get home.  And only about half the cost is covered by Medicare.  My husband is equally busy on Sundays, so we currently have neither enough time to do a real housecleaning nor enough money left to pay someone else to do it for us.  :(  Bottom line:  The apartment is sanitary, but not clean, and there's little time left after the basic sanitizing to do anything else, including having a social life.  :(

With any luck, I'll be able to rein in my osteoporosis, at least.
